Hispanic Outreach and Leadership at Armstrong (HOLA) was joined by members of Phi Iota Alpha fraternity at the HOLA Lunch & Learn to announce the second annual Leo scholarship award on April 14.

President Gian Maleki was present at the meeting and explained what the scholarship entails and the qualifications that a student must meet in order to be eligible.

"It primarily serves as a way to help a student pay for books or things of that sort. They must be a minority student with a 3.0 GPA, and preferably one who has had significant involvement in community service or things of that nature," Maleki said.

Applications for the scholarship, which amounts to $300, are due on April 21 at 5 p.m.

Additionally, only freshmen and sophomores are eligible for the scholarship, Maleki explained.

"Once people get past their sophomore year, they're more likely to graduate at that point, so they're having much less difficulty adapting to college life than freshmen and sophomores are. Lower classmen are still trying to figure out what they want out of their college life, and that's essentially what this scholarship is intended for."

The other major point of business at the meeting was to elect new HOLA representatives, whose duties will now be of especially strong importance given faculty sponsor Melody Rodriguez's upcoming maternity leave.

"I'll be out for about 12 weeks this fall, but I'll still be here up until my due date. I'll still try to be present as much as possible, but I really need everyone to step up to the plate, and I'm fully confident that you'll be able to," Rodriguez said.

After casting ballots and tallying the votes, the newly elected representatives include Jesus Arroyo to the position of HOLA president, Cindy Piedra to the position of vice president and Leslie Sandoval to the position of secretary/treasurer.
