In an attempt to break the Guinness World Records title for Most Live Concerts in 24 Hours in multiple cities, Viacom Music Group recording artists The Flaming Lips are hitting the road on June 27 according to Rich Gerson in a recent press release. As a part of the O Music Awards, the band will board a tour bus and ride through the Mississippi Delta and attempt to de-throne the current record holder, hip-hop artist and rapper Jay-Z.
The O Music Awards is a critically acclaimed awards ceremony and celebration of artists and enthusiasts of the digital music movement and will stream live on OMusicAwards.com during the 24-hour record-breaking period. Actual awards, with categories such as “Most Adorable Viral Star” and “Best Online Concert Experience,” will be awarded throughout the 24-hour time frame as well.
The multiple Grammy winning band will be supported by several other artists including but not limited to Erykah Badu, New Fumes, Bon Iver, Ke$ha, Yoko Ono/ Plastic Ono Band, Tame Impala, Prefuse 73 and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. The supporting acts will appear before The Flaming Lips to play full sets and appease the crowds waiting for the headlining band to appear and play a mini-set.
Known as the birthplace of rock ’n’ roll, the Mississippi Delta will act as the unforgettable backdrop to the band’s journey. The band will be followed for a complete 24-hour period, so viewers of the show should expect the unexpected as they journey from state to state in their vintage tour bus named “Endeavour.” The expedition will begin in Memphis, Tenn., June 27 and end 24 hours later in New Orleans, La.
A full day before The Flaming Lips begin their trip, the band will release the CD “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends,” a diverse and daring collaboration with several different artists, on both digital release through all digital retailers and on physical CD.
Tickets are available at various locations and the full list can be found on the official event website, OMusicAwards.com. Fans can also vote for their favorite acts on the website until the actual event starts. Part of the entire event’s proceeds will benefit VH1’s Save the Music Foundation.
The O Music Awards were created, through the collaboration of MTV, VH1, CMT and Logo, as a way to give undiscovered artists recognition and support and to bring attention to genre-spanning technology trends.
“Since our very first show on Fremont Street in Las Vegas when Matt and Kim appeared inside of a giant cube, O Music Awards have been a platform for fans to discover new artists and bands,” said Rick Krim, Executive vice president of talent and music programming strategy at VH1.
“This cycle we’re featuring the most eclectic line-up to date: indie rock, blues and country. With The Flaming Lips driving the ship, we’re looking forward to seeing the lines of these genres blur and swirl into something new and unexpected.”
